KS1 Reading and Phonics
- In Year 1, phonics is taught using Read, Write Inc.
- In Key Stage 1, the school reading scheme is the Book Banding Scheme.
Read, Write Inc.
In Year One we use the Read Write Inc. literacy programme which provides a systematic approach to teaching literacy, designed to create fluent readers, confident speakers and willing writers.
The Programme contains:
* Phonics for early reading and writing (including spellings)
* Literacy and Language for developing comprehension, writing and spoken language skills
The majority of pupils take home a RWI book. These are changed every 3 or 5 sessions, depending on the group your child is in. In addition we have a selection of levelled reading scheme books which are organised into coloured book bands. As reading books from across several schemes are placed together there will of course be some variation in style and challenge within the same band.
Ideas for when reading the banded books are sent home in your child's reading record book. When you have recorded the title of the book together with comments about your child's reading they will then be allowed to choose another book themselves from the appropriate coloured band. This way they are given control of their own reading within a banded range.
Your child will be assessed at regular intervals to check they have a secure understanding and are well motivated before moving on to more challenging texts. Children also have the opportunity to take home library books.
